Safety and security will be the dominant theme at the ITB Destination Days. On 9 March a keynote session on 'The Status Quo and the Future of Security Policy and Technology' will address controversial issues, examining regions where risk levels are particularly high, suitable strategic and technical measures for improving safety and security, and offering advice for destinations on how to increase safety for travellers.
A panel discussion under the heading of 'The New Order of Tourism Destinations' will look at the economic crisis in countries where demand has fallen and the boom in tourism in places where destinations are safe. The discussion will focus on what solutions can be found to change travel patterns, increase safety and stabilise tourism demand.
Percy von Lipinski, a travel and social media expert, will explain how tour operators can put social media and mobile technologies to successful use in crisis situations. On 10 March, reporting on best practices under the heading of 'Overtourism at Destinations', pioneers from affected tourism regions will reveal their successful strategies ranging from hi-tech solutions to limiting tourism numbers.
On 10 March the ITB CSR Day will discuss 'Cimate – Customers – Communication: How Can Sustainable Travel be Marketed Successfully?'. Prejudice, a lack of information and an unfriendly booking service are common among travel agencies and online travel agencies (OTAs). One year after the practical guide to sustainable tourism destinations was launched together with the Federal Ministry of the Environment (BMUB) and the Federal Nature Conservation Bureau (BfN) at ITB Berlin 2016 the German Tourism Association (DTV) will summarise developments so far.
For ITB Berlin promoting sustainability is a priority task. A new format will round off events at the ITB CSR Day: two adversaries will take the hot seat and engage in a lively debate under pressure, delivering uncomfortable truths, pitting fanatical climate views against a denial of facts. All sessions will be streamed live on the internet.
The ITB Berlin Convention will take place parallel with ITB Berlin for the fourteenth time. Admission is free for trade visitors. In 2016 26,000 visitors and 1,000 journalists attended the event. Programme details can be found at www.itb-kongress.de/en/Program/Topics/.
