Anselm Pahnke had vowed not to buy a single litre of water. “I wanted to sense the rule of nature“, said the 31 year-old geophysicist at the virtual We Love Travel! event in Berlin, describing his journey by bicycle from the south to the north of Africa with as little equipment as possible. A few months turned into three years, and Africa was followed by Asia and then Australia over a total of 40,000 kilometres.

The Central African country Zambia has, until now, survived mainly on agriculture and mining, especially copper production. Now, however, it would like to diversify its economy – and tourism plays a central part. “The development of the tourism sector is part of the strategy to diversify our economy,” explained Charles R. Banda, the country’s tourism minister, at ITB Berlin on Wednesday. For this reason, Zambia, this year’s Convention & Culture Partner at ITB Berlin, is not only attracting visitors but also investors.

The presidential elections In August 2017, followed by a repeat in October, which was a first on the African continent, had at times led to unrest and protests in the country.

Whetting appetites for the coming travel season, ’Africa 2017’ from the Alexander von Humboldt (Heye) edition won the opening prize of the ITB BookAward 2017. This large wall calendar was chosen by ITB Berlin in cooperation with the RavensBuch bookstore from Friedrichshafen.

At ITB Berlin 2017 the tour operator Akwaba Afrika will welcome visitors at their stand with newly produced Virtual Reality presentations of their product range.
Using the VR-device „Rift“ by Oculus, Akwaba Afrika will provide visitors with the opportunity to virtually travel to Africa and witness some of Tanzanias touristic highlights such as the Kilimanjaro, Wildlife in the Selous Game Reserve and the Mahale national, the Indian Ocean reefs of Zanzibar and many more.
