The International Institute for Peace Through India (IIPT) awarded the Celebrating Her prize for the third time at ITB Berlin 2018 and, with it, recognised five inspiring women in travel, tourism, and hospitality. ITB Berlin is also obliged to present a platform for gender equality, stressed Rika Jean-François, CSR officer at ITB Berlin, beforehand.
Over 60 per cent of employees in tourism are women – yet less than 20 per cent of them are in management positions. Presenting the award, Ajay Prakash, President of IIPT, emphasised honouring the winners: “These women are examples for many.”
Colombian Deputy Minister of Tourism Sandra Howard Taylor accepted the award “for all the women of Colombia” and pointed out her necklace, handmade by indigenous women, which she had worn to honour them. Isabel Hill, Director of the National Travel & Tourism Office at the US Department of Commerce, emphasised the travel industry’s responsibility to create a framework within which everyone can reach their full potential: “Empowering women means empowering tourism.” Caroline Bremner, Head of Travel at Euromonitor International, Daniela Wagner, Head of International Partnerships at Jacobs Media Group & Director (EMEA/PATA), and Jyotsna Suri, CMD Lalit Hotels, were also presented with the award.
