Dark Tourism – a topical trend

At ITB Berlin, CHERNOBYL TOUR videos and tour managers have information on the stand and the company is giving away trips to the notorious exclusion zone

Dark tourism is a highly popular trend, with tours to Chernobyl being the best-known example of this form of travel. CHERNOBYL TOUR is a company which organises trips there. The company was established by the former liquidator Serhii Myrnyi – a physicist, chemist, ecologist and head of the 1986 Chernobyl radiation reconnaissance brigade. He has put together all the tours and trained professional tour guides.

At this year’s ITB Berlin visitors to the stand can watch amazing videos of the notorious zone, talk to guides, and even win a tour of the exclusion zone.

The trips organised by CHERNOBYL TOUR take one to seven days and include accommodation in Chernobyl. Visitors can choose between individual and group tours, tours by boat, kajak, aeroplane or even helicopter. Special services are also available for bloggers, journalists and teaching staff.

On the trips visitors can meet people who witnessed the disaster as well as those who helped mitigate its consequences. People who have resettled the exclusion zone will be there too. Visits can also be arranged to meet experts on the Chernobyl zone who work at the nuclear reactor and other scientific facilities.
