Dubai has set up an official body to develop the growing health tourism market. The Dubai Health Experience (DXH) brand was created at the initiative of the Crown Prince, Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum in April 2016, and is being presented for the first time at the new Medical Tourism Pavilion at ITB Berlin 2017. The system includes 42 private hospitals, working alongside the authorities, hotels and the Emirates airline in order to provide medical tourists with a complete package of services. An extended travel insurance scheme has also been developed with the aim of enabling patients to travel to Dubai again for additional treatment if complications should arise when they return to their home country. To provide clients with additional security a system has been set up to register complaints electronically, under the supervision of the state health authority. The system’s own website and an app (DXH) can be used to obtain details about what is available in the seven specialist areas of orthopedics, ophthalmology, dentistry, dermatology and plastic surgery, in-vitro fertilization (IVF), wellness and general check-ups. In 2015 Dubai recorded 298,000 health tourists, and aims to increase this figure to half a million by 2020, according to Linda Abdulla Ali, a consultant with the Medical Tourism Council.
