Ethiopia: “We are the safest country for travellers in all of Africa”

Although a state of emergency is currently in force in Ethiopia, the country’s tourism experts gave their word, in front of the assembled press at ITB Berlin: Travelling is safe in this East African country. “In fact Ethiopia is the safest country in all of Africa in which to travel”, was the confident statement by Sisay Getachew, Director of Tourism Marketing for the Ethiopian Tourism Organization. The state of emergency was declared in mid-February, after the prime minister had announced his resignation following severe criticism.

The Ethiopian delegation preferred to report on their country’s diversity and the unceasing investment in the development of the tourism infrastructure, as well as the cultural, historical and scenic attractions and places of interest. Visitors are promised an unforgettable journey of discovery, summed up by the slogan “Land of Origins”.

As a destination it enjoys the strong support of its partner, Ethiopian Airlines, which for more than 70 years has been connecting African countries with one another, and Africa with the rest of the world. In 2017 the airline was granted four star status by Skytrax and was awarded the title of best African airline. “Our vision is to be the leading airline in Africa by 2025”, explained Thomas Gabreyohannes, Director Germany and Central Europe for Ethiopian Airlines. And he also presented something special for International Women’s Day: since December 2017 the airline has been offering the first internal African flight crewed entirely by women, the “All-Female Flight”. Pilot Amsale Gualu: “When women are granted the same opportunities as men, they can do anything, and that applies to aviation too.”
