Gazing into the night skies’ sparkling diamonds − A journey through the vast universe

For the upcoming year and following a remarkable tradition, the Hall 4.1b Adventure Travel - Responsible Tourism and the 12th Pow-Wow for Tourism Professionals will once again be devoted to a new relevant and special topic of astronomical tourism under the motto “Gazing into the night skies’ sparkling diamonds – A journey through the vast universe”, highlighting this special interest tourism, the importance of celestial bodies on Earth’s life and rhythm not only regarding the human being but also the wildlife, and the challenges faced when trying to realize them in a sustainable and responsible way.

People from all walks of life always express their fascination for sky’s celestial bodies. Whether by day or night, we especially wonder about the most notorious ones: the Sun and Moon, both rulers of Earth’s life rhythm, and the dazzling stars beyond. Since time’s beginning, the universe had been wondered and studied by ancient civilizations that had embedded it in their daily personal and working lives, believes and traditions. For example, when shooting stars are seen, three wishes are traditionally made; on the event of an eclipse, fear was experienced and myths were created.  These objects in the firmament also inspired philosophers, poets and writers. From former times until today, scientists tried and still try to unravel the mysteries of the universe, let alone especially those of our solar system. The development of these minds to pursue the truths arising from their observations are defined by the disciplines known by us today as astronomy, astrology, astrophysics, astrometry − and the special places for their practices such as observatories, planetariums and artificial satellites.

However, the vast universe is not just limited to our sun and moon, but to a plethora of stars, comets, planets, satellites, constellations and other bodies of the outer space, which we could mainly admire during the twilights and deep dark skies even with naked eyes. The sky no longer is the limit and we don’t need to be astronomers to wonder the vast universe.

In regards to travel and tourism, the sky is “all inclusive” while realizing outdoor activities or just chilling out outside at night. The observation of the skies brings people together as group or individuals with same interest, be it amateurs or professionals of this field. It creates a tourism niche well-known as astronomical tourism or simply astrotourism, which motivates people to travel even to remote places for special astronomical events like eclipses, passing comets, meteors and shooting stars showers; mainly to those sites with dark night skies free of artificial light pollution.

The Hall 4.1b Adventure Travel - Responsible Tourism, well-situated within the exhibition grounds of ITB Berlin and with its unique design and attractive decoration, will honour this motto, including its iconic Adventure Stage, Event Area and Challenge Courses. The 12th Pow-Wow for Tourism Professionals, a highly interactive and dynamic symposium and an innovative B2B platform, is the prime site where exhibitors present their products and services to trade visitors and media representatives. Globally-renowned guest speakers also present and discuss a wide range of relevant tourism industry topics such nature and culture tourism, adventure travel, socially-responsible and sustainable tourism, geotourism, geoparks and many more.
