The Social Entrepreneurship in Tourism competition: the winners have been announced

On 21 September the judges announced the winners of The Social Entrepreneurship competition sponsored by ITB Berlin and the Berlin Travel Festival

In June Travel Massive, Hochschule für nachhaltige Entwicklung Eberswalde (HNEE), the Berlin Travel Festival and ITB Berlin came together to organise The Social Entrepreneurship in Tourism competition. As the only competition of its kind worldwide it recognises social innovation and entrepreneurship in tourism. Its focus is on the challenges that result from developments in tourism.

First prize in the category Social Startups & Projects went to Get up and Go Colombia. The organisation supports tourism in the department of Cauca in Colombia – in particular in places which in recent years have been affected by armed conflict. Second prize was secured by Adventure with Local ‘U‘ Ltd. This enterprise, led by women, helps local guides in various parts of Africa. Adventures with Local ’U‘ Ltd. also received a special recognition.  Third place went to Ayeyarwady, a region and eco-tourism project in Myanmar.

In addition to the top three in the above category, the Ideas category had a winner too. Change through traveling was able to secure first place. This organisation from Brazil brings travellers into contact with local providers, not just briefly, but instead ensures a lasting connection. Second place was taken by Impact Travel Collective, which offers live tours, video tours and live online tours. Third place went to Give a hand to a woman, an organisation supporting women in Uganda.

ITB Berlin is a long-standing supporter of sustainability in tourism, and for many years has campaigned in support of a wide range of aspects of socially responsible tourism. These include environmental and coastal protection as well as the rights of women, children and the LGBT+ community.
